What Can TANF Benefits Be Used For?

Who Can Qualify for TANF Texas?

TANF is intended for families with children who are 18 years old or younger and have limited financial resources.

One-Time TANF for Family in Crisis

One-Time TANF is available to families experiencing a temporary financial crisis who have children 18 years of age or younger and have limited income or few financial resources. Qualifying emergencies may include situations such as losing a job, becoming homeless or losing housing, or facing a medical emergency that creates unexpected financial hardship. This emergency cash assistance can be provided only once per family within a 12-month period.

One-Time TANF for Relatives

The One Time TANF for Relatives program provides a one time payment of $1,000 to eligible relatives who are caring for one or more related children receiving TANF benefits. This payment is available only once during the caregiver’s lifetime, regardless of how many related children live in the household now or in the future.

To qualify, the caregiver must be 25 years of age or older, have limited income or financial resources, and be a qualifying relative, such as a grandparent, great grandparent, aunt, uncle, great aunt, great uncle, sister, or brother. While eligibility is generally based on household income, some relatives may still qualify even if their income exceeds the standard limits shown below.

If a relative does not qualify for this one time payment, the child in their care may still be eligible to receive monthly TANF cash assistance if other program requirements are met.
